Children denied the freedom to explore?

According to an article by the BBC, children are currently being denied the enjoyment of nature with potential consequences for their health and well-being.

Since the 1970s, the freedom of children to roam unsupervised has drastically decreased by approximately 90%.

This is due in part to the nervousness of parents and teachers who have become increasingly anxious about real, perceived or potential risks. It is also due to technology and urban sprawl which has ultimately led to the destruction of safe places to play.

Simply put, the world is changing. There seems to be a growing fear of letting children get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

However, according to the article, children are three times more likely to hurt themselves falling out of bed than they are to get hurt from say falling out of a tree.

We are fortunate in the Metro Vancouver region to have several regional parks for our children to explore. Get your kids outside and let your children roam and enjoy the beautiful Metro Vancouver regional park system!
