Happy Bottled Water Free Day

Today, March 18th, 2013 is Bottled Water Free Day!

Worldwide, people are stepping up in support of public water and standing against the privatization of water.

For the vast majority of Canadians, safe drinking water is readily available from the nearest faucet or public drinking foundation. It is regulated, safe, reliable, and affordable. The bottled water industry is less regulated than tap water, requires more energy and causes more harm to the environment (just check out the life cycle of plastic bottles here).

According to Statistics Canada, Canadians are moving away from bottled water. Fewer of us are drinking it and an increasing number of public bodies including municipalities, school boards and campuses are putting an end to the sale of bottled water.

Currently there are over 87 municipalities, 11 school boards and 23 campuses that have committed to ending the privatization of water and phasing out the sale of bottled water.

Join the growing Back the tap movement to –
   – challenge the bottled water industry
   – reject the commodification of water
   – promote safe, environmentally-sound municipal drinking water
   – defend public water systems against privatization
   – demand better funding to maintain and strengthen municipal water systems, and
   – promote safe drinking water for all – including many First Nations communities that currently lack access

There is no easier place to do this than Metro Vancouver – “Ditch the bottle, and turn on the tap!”
