Happy World Tuna Day!

I have to admit, today is the first I have heard of World Tuna Day but in fairness, we do not deal with tuna all too often in the parks and by that – I mean never.

Much to my relief, I am not too out of the loop because today actually marks the first ever World Tuna Day.

In 2011, the eight Pacific Island countries declared May 2nd to be World Tuna Day. These eight countries comprise much of the world’s tuna fishing waters and determined there was a need for a global celebration of these fish and a reminder to conserve them. Finally in 2013, they have successful.

May 2nd is officially a day to recognize the critical role tuna play in marine ecosystems. With more than 20 species ranging from the tropics to the frigid waters of the Arctic and the Southern Ocean, tuna support some of the world’s largest fisheries and the people who rely on them.
