Hold onto your Butt!

Back in June there were many media articles around a potential cigarette butt program initiative for the city of Vancouver. Just like the recycling bottled system, money would be given for the return of cigarette butts. This problem has worsened, as thousands and even millions of cigarette butts are being littered on our streets every day. For more details on this refer to our previous blog posting here.

Curiosity struck us, and we found that other places in the world are starting similar initiatives for cleaning up cigarette butts. The Sufrider Foundation in San Diego has launched a campaign called “Hold on to your butt” in efforts to raise awareness about the environmental impact of cigarette butt litter. They hope to clean their streets, streams, beaches and ultimately encourage other cities to adopt a cigarette butt project. It costs a lot to clean up littered butts but also poses a more significant fire threat. They have successfully installed about 150 ashcans in San Diego County and saw a 65% reduction in littered butts where ashcans were installed.

With this ongoing issue it is crucial that cities start creating a successful program for used cigarette butts.
