Let Round One Begin

Do you have a competitive spirit?

I have entered the Kanaka Creek Watershed Stewardship Centre Project in the Aviva Community Fund voting competition and I need your help!

The competition is tough. It is comprised of three initial rounds followed by semi-finals. In order to make it through, the project needs votes and a lot of them.

With so many amazing projects competing for the funds, why should you back the Kanaka Creek Watershed Stewardship Centre?

Take a walk down memory lane…

Do you remember your teacher asking students to volunteer to look after the eggs in the fish tank? Those fish eggs were part of a Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada program called “Salmonids in the Classroom”. Those involved with the hatchery in Kanaka Creek Regional Park voluntarily provided the eggs to classrooms across the Lower Mainland in order to ensure this program continued. Whether you are from the Lower Mainland or not, if you remember such a program then you understand the importance of not only the hatchery itself but the programs and educational opportunities that centre around it. The new stewardship centre will offer both indoor and outdoor classrooms to ensure that students have access to these unique environmental education programs both as part of school and extracurricular.

In my recent trip down the Fraser River, I was helping my friend with some surveying. We had quite the bush whack to get into the area where he had to complete it and in the process I tripped and fell on a log. It was not until we got back to camp that someone noticed I had cut the back of my thigh on one of the branches. It did not scar but I definitely have war wounds from my days of playing outside. Little marks that remind me of the fun I had growing up playing in woodlots and enjoying the great outdoors. I am sure many of you can relate. The Kanaka Creek Watershed Stewardship Centre offers experiential learning and ultimately a chance for people to get outside in a safe and fun environment. It enables youth to connect with nature whether that means a small war wound or two or a profound understanding for the need to protect the riparian area.

If you value leadership, environmental education, stewardship, experiential learning, environmental protection, rivers and salmon, etc. then vote for this project. Help leave a legacy in Kanaka Creek Regional Park that will serve people across the Lower Mainland as an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and a step back into their childhood.
