SproutsIO – Homegrown Fruits and Vegetables

Thanks to students at MIT, homegrown fruits and vegetables in a small apartment might one day be a possibility – with the help of no other than your smartphone!
http://sprouts.io/about-1/SproutsIO is an indoor microfarming system. It is a soil-free or aeroponic system consisting of units that spray a nutrient mist periodically with the help of sensors controlled by a smartphone app. The simple white and silver units are equipped with lights and cameras so that you can check up on your plants via Facetime when you’re away from home.
The idea behind SproutsIO was to create something friendly for small urban spaces and to save people the legwork of having to figure out how to grow fruits and vegetables in small places. It is simple, convenient and can be quite resource-efficient using 98% less water and 60% less fertilizer than more conventional methods. A person can also produce six times the amount of food than grown in a similarly-sized pot of soil.
Currently in beta-testing, it is expected to be available commercially in approximately a year.
