Summer Adventures 2013

While I was off adventuring in Edmonton over the long weekend, it seems Metro Vancouver experienced what was in some municipalities, record breaking weather for March. Despite the fact the sun seems to have disappeared for the time being, why not keep that sunny, positive attitude and look towards summer?

KEEN has put together a list of 25 ultimate summer adventures and it just so happens that 5 of them are either in the Metro Vancouver region or reasonably close to it (i.e. Whistler).

As you start planning your summer adventures – consider this list of fun:

Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival (False Creek, Vancouver)

2013 marks the 25th anniversary of the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival, a festival founded to showcase Vancouver’s cultural diversity. With thousands making the trek to Vancouver for this event, it has become a celebration of Canada’s unique multicultural heritage. With some of the best boats from across the country, visual arts displays, professional performances by well-known entertainers and activities from local community groups – it is one of Vancouver’s most anticipated summer events.

Crankworx (Whistler)

Crankworx is a 10-day multi-disciplinary mountain bike festival that began in Whistler a decade ago. In the past 10 years, Crankworx has brought high calibre competitors to the stage, launching the careers of numerous professional athletes. Canadian Cheese Rolling Festival (Whistler)

August 17/http://www.canadiancheeserolling.ca/

Join in the chase as an 11-pound wheel of cheese is rolled down a hill. Slip, trip and tumble your way down and if you end up with the cheese – you get to keep it PLUS you win two ski season passes to Whistler Blackcomb (have to work it off somehow)! Wear a costume while you race for a chance to win a $500 gift voucher.
That’s just the race.
Enjoy Canadian cheese with the rest of the festival which includes tasting seminars, conversations with cheesemakers and cheese experts, free activities for children (uphill races, cheese bowling, cheesy twister, face painting) and of course, the opportunity to sample and purchase products!

Grouse Grind Mountain Run (Vancouver)

September 15/www.grousemountain.com

The Grouse Grind Mountain Run draws several hundred professional and amateur competitors from across the country each year, to beat their best times established on the Grouse Grind throughout the season. It also offers a formidable challenge to athletic newcomers seeking to conquer the mountain for the first time.
There will be awards presentations, a BBQ, live music, massage services, yoga and more! Proceeds from the run go directly to the annual Grind For Kids campaign supporting BC Children’s Hospital.

Treetop Trekking (Whistler)

365 days per year/www.whistler.com/treetrek

One of the best ways to view the scenery in Whistler is to climb up amongst the tree tops. Whistler’s Tree Top Adventures offers a series of aerial rope courses, suspension bridges, boardwalks and platforms way up in the canopy so that you can personally meet local wildlife and foliage.
