UNWELCOME VISITORS – COMBATING INVASIVE SPECIES

Pacific Spirit Regional Park is perhaps the jewel in the crown of our 23 regional parks. Covering over 750 hectares, the park has some of the last standing old growth trees in the city and is home to the unique ecosystem of Camosun Bog. People love Pacific Spirit Park.

Last year the park received over 2 million visits. But some visitors to the park are not welcome. Invasive species of plants and animals are a real threat to our park ecosystems. Without intervention, non-native plants such as such as Irish Holly and English ivy, a noxious weed that can climb and eventually kill large trees, can permanently damage habitat.

Enter our heroes – the Holly Haulers, the Ivy Pullers, and the supporters of the Pacific Parklands Foundation. For a year and a half in 2010 and 2011, over 1,200 volunteers (most of them youth) devoted almost 4,000 hours to do battle with invasive plants. They removed over a metric ton of invasive plants and helped restore Camosun Bog, creating a legacy for future generations and protecting unique habitat for plants and animals.
