Recently, patients in the Edmonton-area have been given prescriptions by their doctors for something that is almost guaranteed to extend their lives–exercise.
Believed to be the first program of its kind across Canada, 51 doctors south of Edmonton are now using new prescription pads that enable them to prescribe running, swimming or weights and a free one-month pass to the local recreation facility.
Why are they doing this?
Doctors have stated that when it is written down on a piece of paper, especially a prescription pad, there is a greater sense of importance attached to it.
Who is the target group?
The target group is relatively healthy people who are simply inactive and at the risk of developing chronic health issues such as high blood pressure if their sedentary lifestyles continue.
This has not yet expanded to BC but many are hoping doctors here will adopt a similar practice.
In the meantime, why wait?
Use this as your excuse (not that you need one) to head out and enjoy the Metro Vancouver regional parks with your friends, family or even alone. A little exercise does everyone good and the sunshine we have recently seen in Metro Vancouver certainly makes it more enjoyable!
