Do you enjoy seafood? Want to learn about more sustainable options?
Delicacies of a Delicate Sea is a great resource produced by the David Suzuki Foundation to help guide you to sustainable seafood choices. The focus is on small-scale sustainable fisheries along the coast of British Columbia.
This is a read that has me inspired to try new things… like geoduck. Geoducks are found in abundance along the coast of BC. They have the potential to be a very sustainable industry, however currently markets for geoducks are centred in Asia. Around 1.5 million kilograms of geoduck are produced in BC each year and 97 percent of this is exported to Asia.
The key thing for a sustainable geoduck industry is expanding local markets. British Columbians need to be encouraged to try something different. Geoduck is eaten raw in sushi or ground up and cooked in soups and chowder. Let’s step outside our comfort zones and give it a try!
