Field Trip: Capilano Watershed Tour

Last Friday (July 15), the Pacific Parklands Foundation took a field trip to the Capilano Watershed where we had the opportunity to expand our knowledge about where our local water comes from!

Have you ever thought about where your water comes from? Using 320L per person, per day it is an important question to ask!

We have three watersheds in the area: Seymour, Coquitlam and Capilano. Of these three watersheds Coquitlam is the deepest. Consequently, when Capilano’s water supply is too turbid, it is shut off and the Coquitlam Watershed fills the need in areas that the Capilano Watershed would ordinarily serve.

A notable advantage of the Capilano Watershed’s design is that it works with nature rather than against it. The watershed is served by the mountains it uses gravity rather than having to pay for extra energy to collect water.

Another advantage is that it is a closed water supply. In 1926, Cleveland came up with the idea to put aside water for this purpose only. This means the public does not have access to the water supply for other purposes such as recreation including swimming and other water sports. As beautiful as the watershed grounds are, it is comforting to know they are closed off keeping the water supply secure and protected even with a filtration system.

Still, our guide asked us several times how we feel about this. If you want to visit the site and learn more about it you can always take one of their tours as we did but you cannot visit it at any point in time on your own because it is a secure site. Do you think the water supply should continue to be protected and closed off this way?
