Did you check out Summer Live this weekend?
If so, you may have noticed that Vancouver’s birthday celebration was a little greener than most!
Bottled water was not sold on site at the Summer Live events! Instead, members of the public were asked to BYOWB (bring your own water bottle) to the weekend’s events. Free hydration stations could be found throughout Brockton Point enabling people to refill their own water bottles with refreshing, cool water!
Why is this so important?
According to The Edge.com:
•Canadians consume over $650 million worth of bottled water annually
•2.25 billion liters of bottled water is sold in Canada every year, and approximately 215.68 million kilograms of plastic needed to bottle that water. This is more than the weight of 1328 Boeing 747 airplanes.
•It takes 3 litres of water to produce 1 litre of bottled water
•Canada has one of the world’s largest fresh water supplies, yet over 100 brands of bottled water are sold here, many of them imported from places as far away as Fiji. Think of the fuel usage aand pollution implications!
Planning a local event soon? Why not make it a BYOWB event?
Kudos to Vancouver and Summer Live!
